The final mastering stage of your audio mixes can be both a challenge and a mystery for the unfamiliar. It also used to be something that was difficult to do outside of a specialist mastering studio facility. And, while the latter may well still be the route that’s likely to produce the best results, software such as iZotope’s Ozone has bought the concept of audio mastering firmly into the world of the project and home studio user.
The latest edition of Ozone takes that functionality up a further notch. Yes, you can easily take your mix backwards with inappropriate mastering style processing but Ozone’s Master Assistant does at least try to give you some sensible guidance and, once you find your feet (or perhaps that should be your ears??), it offers a sophisticated suite of tools capable of undertaking almost any mastering task.
