Complete Guitar Wiring by Gerry Hayes

One of my main hobbies doesn’t stray too far from my interests in music technology; I like to mess around with guitars. Whether it’s doing setups, modding them in some way, building parts-casters or doing refinishes, I get a kick out of trying to make a project guitar into something better than when I started. Heck, sometimes, I even succeed in doing so…..

One of my ‘problems’ in this hobby has always been the electronics. This has often resulted in lots of repeat wiring sessions as I (mostly randomly) try different options to try and work out why things are not working as they should….

Well, hopefully, that’s now a thing of the past thanks to discovering Gerry Hayes’ excellent 2022 book ‘Complete Guitar Wiring’. I have to say this is an absolutely fabulous book and, while excellent for someone like me (who didn’t take Electronics 101), I can imagine it would also make a great reference for more experienced guitar builders. The content makes it very clear that Gerry knows his stuff…. but what’s equally clear is that he writes beautifully. Given that the content is mostly of a technical nature, the fact that he makes this both informative and entertaining is quite a trick. It’s is also beautifully presented.

Anyway, I purchased the PDF version…. but I’ve seen the print version and it really does look magnificent. I’m really looking forward to putting this information to good use in a couple of upcoming guitar projects but, if guitars with pickups (electric or acoustic, guitar or bass, active or passive) interest you, then a copy of this on your bookshelf (or computer/tablet) would be well worth having. The best single source I’ve ever seen on the topic, bar none. Highly recommended.
